How Do I Learn Leadership Skills in Toastmasters?

That’s an excellent question. Toastmasters offers a wide range of opportunities to develop and strengthen your leadership abilities in a supportive and practical environment.  A great starting point is to volunteer for a short-term committee—such as one responsible for organizing an open house. Serving on a committee helps you build essential skills like collaboration, team communication, and project coordination.

Another valuable leadership opportunity at the club level is managing our club’s speech contest. This role allows you to practice key leadership skills such as recruiting volunteers, organizing logistics, and motivating members to participate.

Several projects within the Toastmasters education program also focus on leadership, such as organizing events or leading a team to complete a project. If you’re unsure where to begin, reach out to the club’s Vice President of Education. They can recommend a project that aligns with your interests or connect you with a committee in need of support.

Serving as a club officer is a more advanced step in your leadership journey. As part of the executive team, you’ll work closely with other officers to guide the club toward its goals. This experience offers valuable lessons in strategic planning, team management, and decision-making—skills that are transferable to both personal and professional settings.

One of our members often says, “Come to Toastmasters to learn speaking skills—stay for the leadership experience.” It’s a sentiment that truly captures the full value of what Toastmasters has to offer.
