Meeting Minutes – August 9, 2017

Meeting Minutes
South County Toastmasters (#1957)

Meeting Date:                     August 9, 2017

Meeting Type/Theme:      Regular Meeting – Theme: ”National Book Lovers’ Day”

Meeting Location:             Metropolitan Life Building

Called to Order:                   7:01 PM

Presiding Officer:                Kathy Denton, President

Officers’ Reports:                NONE

Committee Reports:

  • Jim Salih announced we now have a spot for youth leadership – 7 – 8:30 on either Tuesday or Wednesday at a place Phil recommended

Unfinished Business:        NONE

New Business:

  • We are looking to reinitiate the speaker bureau which gives us an opportunity to speak outside of the club. Members would submit speeches they are willing to give outside of the club. You would submit a bio and a speech you’d be willing to give outside of the regular meetings and we post on our website. If someone is interested, the President (Kathy Denton) would let you know if they’ve reached out for you to speak. If you’d like to help in this effort, please let Phil Gawlak know. If you’d like to volunteer to give a speech please submit a brief bio and your speech description to Kathy and Phil.
  • Speech crafters is another initiative we’d like to begin getting involved in again. It’s similar to youth leadership but more geared toward adults – giving a crash course around toastmasters where people typically give around 4 speeches. If you’re interested or would like to volunteer to help put this together, please reach out to Tim Sullivan.
  • Kathy would like to look into providing trophies for members that have been in the club for 25 years or more.
    • Motion passed to work with Bill Collier’s company to get these trophies
    • Talk after club – motion suspended until further fleshed out by committee as brought up by Bill Collier. If you have any further ideas, please email Kathy Denton and Bill Collier

Announcements:

  • Jack Bettag mentioned Costco’s publication which featured a two-page description of toastmasters and the benefit – reinforces why we come every week. Would be great to promote club wide, on social and to have copies to distribute to guests if applicable.
  • At the end of the meeting Bill Collier revisited the trophy idea and added that we could possibly add a note on the website or create a pin that someone can pin to their nametag for ongoing recognition and ongevity but also recognizing shorter term accomplishments to help keep newer members engaged and active
    • Sarah Pitkin built off Bill’s point and stated we should focus on the younger generation and a strategy for convincing them that toastmasters is beneficial to them, as they (us – millennials) are so reliant on technology and media that there is this underlying idea that giving speeches is not necessary
  • Kathy Denton pointed out that it’s refreshing when people dress up for speeches and significant roles.

  1. *KATHY and PHIL*, I am happy to be a member of the SCTM SPEAKERS BUREAU again. The original SCTM Speaker Bureau directory that was published, sent out (and may still be online) was chaired by Carl Hendrickson, and my info in it should still be relevant. * PLEASE ADVISE, or I would be happy to contribute new information to the SCTM Speakers Bureau 2017 Database.* My topics were AMERICAN and LOCAL HISTORY (History of St. Louis), MILITARY and VETERANS ISSUES, and PUBLIC ART and ARCHITECTURE. Thanks for reactivating the SCTM Speakers Bureau! *Sincerely, MAX KAISER, Jr. maxskaiser2@gmail.com PH: (314) 629-0598*
